Lewis became an atheist when he was 13 years old and his dislike of Christianity is evident in many of his letters. The volume concludes with a letter describing an evening spent with J.R.R. Este volumen recoge nueve sermones del autor, proclamados en su mayor parte en Oxford durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y en los años inmediatamente posteriores. <br/> Salvo el primero, que da título al volumen, siguen un orden cronológico, y fueron publicados por primera vez en 1949. Todos ellos se compusieron en respuesta a peticiones personales y para audiencias concretas, y el autor prefirió respetar su tono original, sin modificación alguna. Conservan, por tanto, la fuerza y energía del momento en que fueron pronunciados.

George MacDonald (1824-1905) fue un escritor escocés poco conocido incluso hoy en día, pero sus obras fueron muy admiradas por escritores como Tolkien y Lewis, quien llegó a considerarlo un genio y, sobre todo, su maestro.
