This novel is the final volume of the Allan Quatermain saga. Once more Quatermain takes the hallucinogenic taduki drug, as he did in previous novels, and he finds himself reliving as Wi, an civilized man living in the barbaric ice age as part of a clan of cavemen. Ayesha, the Return of She is a gothic-fantasy novel by the popular Victorian author Henry Rider Haggard, published in 1905, as a sequel to his far more popular and well known novel, She. Horace Holly and his ward Leo Vincey once again embark on a quest to find the mysterious woman known as Ayesha. Knowing that She is no longer in Africa, they go east, eventually reaching a lamasery in the mountains of Tibet.

The last novel written by Haggard; finished just before his death and published posthumously. Ramose is the offspring of an Egyptian Pharaoh and a Greek woman. Brought up in a life of luxury he is catapulted into a life of adventure which leads him to the fall of Babylon at the hand of the Persian Empire under Cyrus.

Cetywayo and His White Neighbours is a 1882 nonfiction book by Henry Rider Haggard. It was based on his time working in South Africa. Sir Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa, and a pioneer of the Lost World literary genre.

In this sequel to Marie, Allan Quatermain helps his Zulu friend Saduko in a crazy battle to win 100 cattle for the dowry of his love Mameena. His personal fears meet the tragic legacy of other doctors’ careless ignorance and spawn a malignant crusade against vaccination that will ultimately create many more victims. Henry Rider Haggard writes to alarm and educate his public, and creates a very engaging villain to carry his message.

In Elissa Henry Rider Haggard takes his readers to the Phoenician city in South Central Africa the mysterious ruins of which have been the subject of so much speculation and research in the recent past. A trading town, protected by vast fortifications and adorned with many temples dedicated to the gods of the Sidonians, was built by civilized men in the heart of Africa may not be accurately known, but there is ample room for speculation as to the life of the ancient city, and in this romance the author has tried to picture incidents such as might have accompanied the first extinction of Zimbabwe.

The author of adventures as King Solomon’s Mines and She turns to domestic drama in this romance. Joan is a shop girl of illegitimate birth a single mother at the same time. Torn from the love of country-dwelling Captain Henry Graves, Joan endures exile with a Dickensian London family, and pursuit by a Victorian-era stalker.

When the ship that Andrew and Clara are on, en route to Oceania, founders after striking an iceberg in the south Indian Ocean, and Andrew fetches up, with his manservant, on the desolate Marion Island, around 1,500 miles southeast of the Cape of Good Hope. It is there that Andrew finds the true love of his life, Mary, who had been shipwrecked on the island some 15 years before and who had been living there alone.

The youthful Allan Quatermain is bound for strange adventures, in the company of the ill-fated Pieter Retief and the Boer Commission, on an embassy to the Zulu despot, Dingaan. Yet he is bound, too, for one of the deepest romances of his life – for in Marie he tells of his courtship and marriage to his first wife, Marie Marais.

While Quartermain visits Lord Randall, two foreigners come asking for Macumazana – that is, asking for Allan Quartermain by the name he used among the Africans. The two visitors are Harut and Marut, priests and doctors of the White Kendah People and they have come to ask Allan Quartermain for his help. The White Kendah people are at war with the Black Kendah people who have an evil spirit for a god. That spirit of the god resides in the largest elephant they have ever seen, an elephant that no man can kill – save Allan Quartermain. Now our intrepid hero must return to Africa and destroy this evil spirit before it kills every one of the White Kendah People.

Treasure and the occult are vividly blended in this stirring tale of Africa. Allan Quatermain finds a village in the middle of the Dark Continent ruled by a huge, pale man with a strange knowledge of future events.

The Witch’s Head is the second novel by H Rider Haggard, which he wrote just prior to King Solomon’s Mines. Zulu magic comes to the British Fenlands, as the severed head of a sorcerer casts a spell from beyond the grave. The story sweeps from England to the South African setting Haggard knew well from his years with Britain’s colonial service.

A young man named Rupert Ullershaw falls in a love with the wife of his much older cousin, Lord Devene. The woman commits suicide, and the young Rupert promises his mother to henceforward “follow the way of the Spirit, not that of the Flesh.” After 11 years of soldiering in India and Egypt, Rupert returns home to England, where he marries his cousin Edith, a woman who is repelled by him but agrees to matrimony only because of Rupert’s career prospects. Edith is actually in love with another of her cousins, the dastardly Dick, who arranges for Rupert to be sent back to Egypt, for a highly dangerous mission…

The Mahatma and the Hare is the story of the selfcalled mahatma – a spiritual man who is able, when asleep, to view “The Great White Road” on which the souls of those recently departed enter heaven – encounters the hare of the title after that animal’s death. Barbara Who Came Back is the story of Septimus Walrond, who was returning from a professional visit to a distant cottage of his remote and straggling parish upon the coast of East Anglia. His errand had been sad, to baptise the dying infant of a fisherman, which just as the rate was finished wailed once feebly and expired in his arms.

Henry Rider Haggard was an English writer, largely of adventure fi ction, but also of non-fi ction. The eighth child of a Norfolk barrister and squire, through family connections he gained employment with Sir Henry Bulwer during the latter’s service as lieutenant-governor of Natal, South Africa. Haggard travelled to southern Africa in 1875 and remained in the country for six years, during which time he served as Master of the High Court of the Transvaal and an adjutant of the Pretoria Horse. Rider Haggard’s time in Africa proved inspirational for him, and while still in Natal he wrote two articles for The Gentleman’s Magazine describing his experiences.
