Противоречивое отношение общества к проституции, т.е. платному профессиональному сексу, связано с двойственным отношением к самому сексу. С одной стороны, секс приносит удовольствие, а потому сексуальные услуги за плату можно рассматривать по аналогии с любыми другими приобретаемыми услугами. С другой стороны, секс, не сопряженный с деторождением, раньше обычно осуждался.
